Early History
In 1969, Lloyd Hansen purchased Tollett Tool and Die where
he had been the general manager for 9 years. The business
was renamed Ultra Tool & Die and was located in Menomonee
Falls, Wisconsin, a suburb of Milwaukee, specializing in precision
tooling, metal stamping dies, and specialty machines. Ultra
Tool was an early adopter of Wire EDM technology which drastically
changed the way tools were built. The name was changed to
Ultra Tool and Manufacturing in the early 1970s when the company's
focus shifted to include contract metal stamping. The metal
stamping operation gradually expanded with the success of
two of its major customers -
Harley-Davidson and Alliant Techsystems (formally Honeywell
Defense).
Ultra Tool Milestones
1986
In keeping with the tradition of embracing new technology,
laser machining was added with the purchase of a 500 watt
laser system. Ultra Tool uses laser machining to support
tooling and manufacturing functions and to provide quick
turnaround for short-run production.
1988
Terry Hansen, Lloyd's son, became president and owner of
Ultra Tool and Manufacturing.
Terry spent eight years in various positions throughout
the company including apprentice, journeyman toolmaker,
quality control, and vice-president of manufacturing prior
to assuming the role of president.
1989
Ultra Tool was awarded a "Vendor Appreciation Award"
from Harley-Davidson which recognized Ultra Tool as a quality
supplier and also recognized the long-term partnership between
the two companies.
1995
Ultra Tool was recognized as a ship-to-stock supplier for
Alliant Techsystems Combined Effects Munitions program.
This award was the result of an extensive quality survey
performed by Alliant personnel and Ultra Tool's quality
history during the program.
1998
Ultra Tool doubled its space and built a new custom-designed
41,000 sq. ft. facility to meet the needs and challenges
of its customers. This new expanded tool room and press
room were embraced by employees and customers alike.
2002
Fiskars Brands, Inc., a current customer, rewards
Ultra Tool's quality program by eliminating
its incoming inspection of all parts received.
A research and development effort was begun to establish
smart die technology in pursuit of
zero-defects production. This advancement gives Ultra Tool
the ability to measure and adjust the die during operation
to insure perfect parts. This effort will also allow for
in-die welding and assembly.
2003
The ability to design dies in 3D was added to meet
customer demand.
A 400 ton Minster punch press was purchased to expand
stamping capabilities.
Ultra Tool opened a second plant as a distribution
and secondary operations center
with 11,000 sq. ft.
2004
Ultra Tool accepted a long-term agreement with Harley-Davidson
to meet quality and pricing goals in exchange for continued
growth with the motor company.
Today
Celebrating 38 years in business, Ultra Tool currently employees
