First Fruits of Fabrication Department
Ultra Tool's new Fabrication Department recently saved a customer over $120,000 in up front tooling costs to produce a Hydraulic Pump Bracket Assembly that eventually makes its way into the Nissan Murano convertible. The part is comprised of three components with an estimated annual usage (EAU) of 6,000. The progressive dies quoted to stamp all three components totaled $138,000.
"Typically we look for a maximum two-year payback to justify progressive tooling," says Ultra's Sales Engineer, Matt Schemelin. With such a low EAU the lower costs of a stamped part would have taken more than eight years to make up for the more expensive tooling. "If that weren't enough, the expected model life in the automotive industry is only four years,"
says Schemelin.
In addition to our fabrication capabilities, Power Packer, a leader in hydraulic actuation systems for the automotive industry, also took advantage of our stamping, value added and outsourcing options so that the parts they receive are assembled and ready to use.
In a strategic move this past summer we added the Fabrication Department in order to offer the same efficiency and quality produced by our Stamping and Tooling departments to accommodate smaller orders.

Positive Experience at FABTECH
Ultra Tool's Vice President of Sales, Dan Nelson, had nothing but good things to say about his trip to Atlanta this past November to represent Ultra Tool at the FABTECH metal forming show. The show proved to be a success in terms of opportunity to talk to current customers as well as generate new leads.
"There were positive signs as far as overall attendance and quality of the people coming through," Dan said. "There were lots of direct questions about specific projects, providing ample opportunity to develop new relationships."
Although it was not the first time Ultra Tool has participated in this event, it was our first time presenting our new Fabrication capabilities. The interest and inquiry was encouraging. With such a successful show it was an easy decision to sign up for the Design-2-Part show also in Atlanta this March. We look forward to another great show and hope to see some of you there!

Benefits of Plex beginning to show
The end of our transition to Plex, our new ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) system, is near; and with the end in sight we are starting to get a taste of its benefits. The project was officially kicked off in June of 2010, and since then a core group of internal staff has been thoroughly trained in the system's details, processes and functions. Currently, the production floor hardware is being put in place while existing data is being entered into the database and a training curriculum is being developed for employees.
Once data entry is complete the entire system will be tested for data quality and integrity before the system goes live on March 21. Thus far, Plex has met our expectations as a means to more efficiently serve our current customers and support future growth. As we continue to make our way through stacks of files we look with excitement and anticipation towards what our future with Plex will bring.
